The Ace of Hearts is based on the November 1969 Playboy calendar photo of DeDe Lind, which was stowed away in the Apollo 12 spacecraft during its November 1969 voyage to the moon.
Apollo 12's ground crew labelled the image 'Map of a Heavenly Body' and secretly stashed the photo in a locker aboard the command module Yankee Clipper, where it was later discovered.
These paintings were originally shown at Engler & Piper in Berlin. The Apollo 12 Girls were hung on opposing side walls of the storefront space, interspersed with small target paintings. The gun painting (originally from the Dreamlands series) was displayed on the far-side gallery wall. The back room contained a series of gaudy acrylic & glitter canvases based on prostitute's calling cards.
The title of the show was inspired by a beautiful old GDR hotel-vitrine, inscribed with the words 'Hotel Romantica'.
