about
Sig Waller was born in Swansea (Wales), and spent her early years roaming the beaches and woodlands near her home, inventing stories and adventures. Her father was an American historian who dressed like a tramp, her mother a German psychologist and housewife. The family foraged for food, brewed ale, collected driftwood and threw wild parties.
As a teen, Sig yearned for the bright lights of the big city and at age 18, she went to study Fine Art & Art History at Goldsmiths College, London. While at college, Sig became involved in the squatting scene, and spent many subsequent years immersed in the intrepid world of anarchic living. After graduating from Goldsmiths, she initially went on to work in animation, music videos and design.
In 1995 Sig relocated to Berlin, and it was here that she returned to art-making. Adopting the alias S.I.G., she created Dreamlands , an expansive series of TV paintings, which toured venues in Europe, culminating in a solo show in New York in 2001.
Sig´s son Sky was born in 2002, after which the artist suffered from postpartum depression. It was from this dark place that she painted Desert Storm, a reflection on the political climate during the Iraq War.
In 2006, Sig moved back to London. Here she began writing and making art from litter collected off the streets. Deciding against bringing up a child in the Big Smoke, Sig & son relocated to Brighton on the south coast of England. She received an MA in Fine Art from the University of Brighton in 2010.
While in Brighton, Sig discovered a passion for antique fabrics and embroidery and began working on Parlour Games , an ongoing drawing project. In 2013, her Shadow Monster first came into being. Concurrent with this, Sig started working on Happy Homes. This marked a turning-point in Sig’s art, as her work became increasingly personal and analytic.
Sig eloped back to mainland Europe shortly before the UK referendum on Brexit. Her ensuing series Hell is Empty is a satirical reflection on the politics of Brexit and Trump.
Since 2017, Sig has been curating Running with the Wolves , a Folk-Horror & magick themed touring exhibition. In 2022, Sig founded the Tao Twins together with her husband Udo Zöls. The Tao Twins are a multidisciplinary artist collective focussing on the intersection of nature and magic.
Sig’s painterly focus is currently on the monstrous feminine, which has become a leitmotiv in recent years. The archetype of the witch also exerts an increasing fascination on the artist.
Sig is now based in Saarbruecken, on the German border to France, where she lives with Sky and their dog Doli. When she isn’t making art, Sig is busy restoring the old family home - the Hexen Haus and rescuing her garden - the Jungle from the wild. Sig is a practicing chaos witch, with a keen interest in the healing properties of plants, crystals and nature.
S.I.G. is represented by C4 Kunsthandel in Berlin.
